The special bond that exists between horses and humans is the centerpiece of the Therapeutic Equestrian Riding and Animal Care program offered at Salem Independent Living.
Horses help people feel in control of their situation because there is a direct correlation between action and reaction. To learn how to care for and ride a horse, an individual must also be able to communicate efficiently with the horse and the instructor. In this way, riding is a very rewarding social activity, and is less daunting to people who are uncomfortable in social situations.
Horses are extraordinary animals. They seem to sense when people have special needs and they try their best to adapt to meet those needs. Horses are unbelievably understanding and compassionate, who truly give their hearts and souls for the people that love them. It is no wonder then that horses make such wonderful “therapists.” Therapeutic riding and horse interaction is a powerful tool for individuals with developmental disabilities. |
